Activities

1.  Make your own mosquito!  Ok, not for real, these will be much cuter, but you can make it so that it really buzzes!  

2.  Learn about the life cycle of a mosquito.  (Ask a parent's permission before going online.)

3. How fast can you flap your arms?  Is is 500 times a minute?  How about 20?  Set a timer and see how fast you are!

As you're probably painfully aware, mosquitoes are everywhere -- and they’ve been around since the dinosaurs. But why do mosquitoes seem to enjoy annoying us?  Why do they buzz and suck blood, and how come their bites itch so much?  And would the world really be better off… without them?

Scabs

Activities

1.  Ready to see how blood thickens?  Make sure you ask an adult first, because this is a messy one, but here are two experiments that let you see how blood thickens to become a clot.

2.  Blood has several things inside of it that work together to help your body heal.  Ask an adult if you can make a blood model in a bottle!

3.  Scraps and cuts happen, especially to growing children.  Sit down and create a First Aid Kit with the adults in your house!  If you need some ideas, here is a list from the Red Cross.  Adults, make sure to keep medications and sharp objects away from children.

Chances are, if you’ve been physically active lately, the skin on your knee, elbow, finger or foot, might show evidence of a bump, bruise or scrape. And, if it's a big enough scrape... you might even have... a SCAB!  But what are scabs? How do they form?  What is their purpose? They might look like just a hard, reddish patch - but there’s actually a lot going on under there!

The Nervous System

Activities

1.  Let's use the neurons in your auditory cortex by... sitting quietly!  Take some deep breaths and think about what you see.  Are you outside or in a car?  Do you see trees, animals, or houses?  What do you hear?  Cars?  Birds? The dishwasher?  Draw a picture of some of the things you notice!

2.  Use your sensory neurons by finding your favorite stuffed animal, pillow or blanket and cuddling with it  (You can find someone you love to snuggle as well!)  How does the stuffed animal feel on your skin?  Is it soft, or is it poking you?  Does it make you feel warm of cold?

3.  Motor Neurons help you move -- so, let's get moving!  Run, dance, twirl, or jump!  Pick your favorite movement and celebrate how your body can move.  Keep track of what you can and can't do!

Did you know your nervous system is the center of all mental activity – allowing you to absorb, remember, and utilize information?  That's right, along with your hormones, your nervous system helps you maintain homeostasis - which is a fancy way of saying a 'comfortable, body temperature'. Your nervous system keeps you connected to your environment, both internally (inside you) &externally (around you.) But, how exactly does your nervous system work? Why is it so important? And, how can you keep it healthy?

Bedtime

Activities

1.  Sometimes, it's hard to go from being very busy to being calm enough to go to sleep.  If your brain and body still feel busy at bedtime, try story time!  Have an adult read to you or, read a story from a book yourself!  It can be something new or an old favorite.  Either way, reading is linked to feeling sleepy.

2.  Does your brain prefer music to calm down?  You could try listening to some calming music as you fall asleep.  What kind of music do you find best for falling asleep to?

3.  Did your busy day include lots of fun, messy play?  Take a bath or shower!  A warm, relaxing bath or steamy shower will not only get you clean, but help you relax and be ready for a good night's sleep!

Look, you might not feel tired - but guess what, all humans, animals, plants, and in some cases, even germs– need to balance activity versus rest. But why do you need a bedtime? How do you go to bed when you're not tired?  If no one told you when to go to bed would you just stay up forever? And what are the best ways to insure a peaceful, restful bedtime?

Sweat

Activities

1.  Time to get outside and sweat!  Actually, we mean exercise, but if you're doing something that keeps your heart rate up, you'll likely be sweating a little.  Grab an adult and go fro a bike ride, jog, or play some basketball!  

2.  Running around isn't the only way to break a sweat!  Other physical activities, like doing pushups can also raise your heart rate and make you stronger.  

3.  When you sweat, you need to make sure you drink lots of fluids so you don't get dehydrated.  Check out this experiment using potatoes to see how your body loses fluids.

Did you know sweat is made of water, salt, and a dash of other chemicals?  But why do you sweat when you’re nervous? Or, when it's hot out? Where does sweat come from and how is it helping you despite making you look like you just went swimming?

Muscles

Activities

1.  Creating obstacle courses with furniture, pillows, boxes, and blankets helps develop large motor skills - so get creative and build one!  How can you crawl, hop, and skip around your obstacle course?

2.  Try some light calisthenics using just your body.  Do jumping jacks, pushups, sit-ups, leg lifts, mountain-climbers, squats, crunches, or even a headstand (use a wall to help you balance and have someone spot you.)  See if you can feel and name the various muscles each exercise works!

3.  Time to go outside!  Make sure you have permission from an adult first.  It's time to ride your bike, run, jump, skip, swing, climb,  or roll down a hill!

Did you know you have 650-840 muscles in your body?  But what exactly are muscles?  How do they allow you to do so many different things?  And how can you make your muscles bigger and stronger?

Activities

1.  Did you know you can inflate a balloon with a soda?  Grab an adult and take this one outside because it could get messy.  This carbon dioxide experiment will help you see all of the bubbles escaping when you open a soda.

2.  If you wanna see what happens when gas from soda goes into your stomach, there’s an experiment you can do at home. Just Google "Why Does Soda Pop Make You Burp Experiment" and click the video. 

3.  Have you ever cleaned with . . . soda pop?  This penny cleaning experiment will show you how corrosive  soda pop can be.

Did you know when soda pop was first invented, it was marketed as... medicine? But does soda pop have any medicinal value? Why does soda pop make you burp?  And how do they put bubbles in soda in the first place?

1.  Your kidneys filter out the things your body doesn't need. This experiment is a great model of how your kidneys work.

2.  Stanford Children's Health website has some interesting diagrams if you want to see how everything fits inside your body!

You may have noticed, the lighter colored your pee - the less it smells. But what does the color of your pee mean?  And how does your body turn liquids like lemonade into pee in the first place... and why?

Naps

Activities

1. You might not be napping anymore, but reading books before bed is a great way to wind down and relax before you fall asleep.  Grab a favorite off the shelf or ask to go to the library and pick out a new, fun adventure to read.

2. Are you afraid of the dark?  Perhaps you can get some glow in the dark stars to decorate your room.  You can create constellations and best of all they'll make it a little brighter as you drift off to sleep.

3. Is your brain feeling busy at the end of the day and keeping you awake? Start a journal and write down anything you're worried about & what you'd like to do the next day.  It'll help clear your mind for sleep.

Babies sleep up to 18 hours a day -- so why is it, after giving up naps as a kid, you often end up napping again as an adult (or wishing you could)?  Why do you take naps, anyway?  And why are short naps sometimes better than long ones?
